1. E-Lander AR-15 Steel 6.5mm Grendel Magazines - Overall Best 6.5 Grendel Magazines
The E-Lander AR-15 Steel 6.5mm Grendel Magazines could be the only magazines in this article. I won’t do that to you. But these are definitely the best 6.5 Grendel magazines available right now.
On the surface, these magazines are simply traditional steel AR-15 magazines that fit 6.5 Grendel magazines. To some extent, they are.
However, these are one of the few 6.5 Grendel magazines that are offered in multiple capacities. You can get these magazines in 4, 10, 17, and 24 round capacities.
The capacities might seem a bit odd. But these magazines are almost exactly the same size as your 5.56mm magazines. That way your rifle manipulations with your 6.5 Grendel rifle are pretty much the same as your 5.56mm rifle.
But it’s not all about bullets. There are a couple of additional features that make these magazines more than worth the price.
First, these magazines have additional heat treating to ensure that the heavier spring and additional tension required for feeding 6.5 Grendel rounds doesn’t warp your magazine and cause premature failure.
Then, the corrosion resistant coating is super durable. It resists wear very well. And it’s a matte finish, which actually gets smoother as you break in your magazines.
So, while these magazines might make your rifle’s action feel a tiny bit gritty at first, run some rounds through them, and things should smooth out.
Lastly, these magazines have a self-lubricating anti-tilt follower. It looks a lot like a Magpul follower (maybe it is). And it works just as well as a Magpul follower for keeping your rounds aligned in the magazine.
Yes, these magazines cost more than most 5.56mm magazines. But they’re the most durable and reliable 6.5 Grendel magazines on the market. And the 17 and 24-round models are often in stock. So stock up.
2. Ammunition Storage Components AR-15 6.5 Grendel Stainless Steel Magazine - Budget 6.5 Grendel Magazines
Ammunition Storage Components magazines are usually pretty solid. Yes, they have a few models that haven’t worked out that well. But the Ammunition Storage Components AR-15 6.5 Grendel Stainless Steel Magazine is one of their good ones.
These are steel magazines. And the construction is pretty standard. They look like classic USGI magazines. And they are similar to USGI magazines in many ways.
However, these magazines have a few improvements over standard USGI magazines.
These magazines have dimpled feed lips. The dimpling makes the feed lips more rigid. That way they resist warping. So these magazines last longer than standard USGI magazines.
Additionally, these magazines have extra heat treating to add even more distortion resistance.
Then, the steel body is coated in a Marlube finish. The finish is remarkably corrosion resistant and offers excellent friction reduction. Additionally, the Marlube finish gets smoother as these magazines break in. So, the more you use these magazines, the better they get.
Last thing: these magazines have self-lubricating anti-tilt followers. They aren’t Magpul followers. They’re ASC’s own design. But the followers work really well.
Unfortunately, these Ammo SC magazines are only offered in 10-round capacities.
But, they’re super affordable. If you need a good supply of 6.5 Grendel magazines, these magazines are a great place to start.
3. Duramag 6.5 Grendel Stainless Steel AR Magazine - Value 6.5 Grendel Magazines
The Duramag 6.5 Grendel Stainless Steel AR Magazine is an improvement on the original USGI design, much like many of the other 6.5 Grendel magazines on the market. But these do have their own merits.
As you probably guessed, these magazines are steel. However, the body is shaped to provide as much space inside the magazine as possible. That way debris inside your magazine won’t cause jams.
Additionally, these magazines are finished in a super secret proprietary coating that reduces friction.
All this is supported by a Snap-On anti-tilt follower that’s been trimmed to fit the magazine. Overall, these three features ensure that your magazines function smoothly and reliably.
And, the feed lips are dimpled to resist warping. So these magazines work reliably and last as long as possible.
Unfortunately, these magazines are only available in 10-round capacities.
But these Duramag magazines are still a super reliable, long lasting, and affordable option if you don’t need higher magazine capacities.
4. C-Products AR-15 Stainless 6.5 Grendel - Durable 6.5 Grendel Magazines
The C-Products AR-15 Stainless 6.5 Grendel are focused on being durable. And they are durable. But that’s not the whole story.
Now, these are steel magazines. The construction is pretty typical. However, the feed lips are dimpled to resist warping. That way your magazines last as long as possible, despite additional tension required for feeding 6.5 Grendel.
Additionally, the finish is remarkably thick and durable. It’s also a matte finish that reduces glare. The finish also gets smoother as you use these magazines. So, if the action feels a tad gritty at first, just shoot more to smooth it out.
Last thing: these magazines are packed with a polymer anti-tilt follower. It’s pretty much the same as a Magpul anti-tilt follower. It keeps everything aligned and feeding smoothly.
Unfortunately, it’s difficult to find these magazines in any other capacity than 5-rounds. These magazines ARE available in 10 and 28-round capacities. The higher capacities are just often backordered.
But, you can modify the 5-round magazines to fit 10 rounds if you’re handy.
So, for those who prioritize durability in their magazine selection, these C-Products are an excellent choice.
5. Franklin Armory DFM Magazine - California Compliant 6.5 Grendel Magazines
Franklin Armory has been on at the forefront of making California compliant firearms and accessories for quite a while. So it makes sense that the Franklin Armory DFM Magazine is designed to make your AR-15 California (and Connecticut and New York) compliant for the lowest possible price.
However, these are still high-quality magazines.
These magazines are steel, with a construction that’s very similar to a standard USGI magazine. But the feed lips are dimpled to resist warping and extend the lifespan.
Additionally, these magazines are finished in a deep black, corrosion resistant finish. The finish is also remarkably smooth to promote smooth feeding and reliability.
Then, these magazines use a high-visibility anti-tilt follower that looks a lot like a Magpul follower. Though the follower might be manufactured by Franklin Armory.
Now, for the compliance bit.
First, these magazines hold 10-rounds, which is compliant with the laws in every state (I think. Check your local laws).
But, the big deal is that these magazines convert a standard AR-15 into a fixed magazine AR-15.
The magazine must be inserted from the top of the lower receiver, with the action disassembled. The magazine locks into the standard magazine catch. But there are limiting tabs that prevent the magazine from being removed through the bottom of the magazine well.
So you must disassemble the action to reload the magazine, exactly like a rifle with a fixed magazine release.
This gives you a compliant firearm without permanently modifying your rifle.
This Franklin Armory model is one of the most expensive 6.5 Grendel magazines on the market. And it turns your rifle into a fixed-magazine firearm. So it’s obviously only preferable if you live in a state that requires a fixed magazine.
But it’s definitely the simplest and most affordable option for getting a compliant 6.5 Grendel AR-15.
