Comparison Table

A lot of things happened in the 90’s and early 2000’s. One of those was the “support hand on the front of the magazine well” AR-15 grip. Or maybe it started in the 80’s.

Either way, even though other grip techniques have proven better for many shooting contexts, sometimes you need a more compact shooting platform. Or maybe you’re just into the magwell grip.

In either case, an AR-15 magwell grip comes in handy and provides a nice place for your support hand.

The Ergo Grip AR15/M16/M4 Never Quit Magazine Well Grip is the least intrusive AR-15 magwell grip that will still do the job.

Ergo Grips is known for their rubber grip sleeves and other accessories. And this magwell grip is essentially a rubber sleeve that goes around your magazine well. Simple enough.

However, this grip rides higher than most magwell grips. It seats almost right against the barrel nut. There are cutouts to keep your controls clear. So it won’t interfere with your weapon manipulations. And it could even reduce the chances of accidentally releasing your magazine.

And it adds 2 rubberized finger grooves to the front of your magazine well, without adding much bulk. I personally think this magwell grip looks the best, because it’s the most minimal.

However, you do need to take the front pin out of your trigger guard to get this grip onto your rifle, since it wraps through the front of the trigger guard.

The installation may be a bit more involved than some other grips. But this grip definitely will not come off once you’ve got it installed.

It’s a little work to put on. But once it’s installed, this grip is both an ergonomic and an aesthetic upgrade for your AR-15.

The Armaspec Rhino R-23 Magwell Funnel and Grip is simple to install. And it uses the limits of very simple installation to add some utility to your rifle.

First, this magwell grip adds a lot of grip surface to your magwell. There’s enough room on this grip for a full four-finger weak hand grip. So it gives you as much stability as possible from a compact shooting platform, which means more precise shooting.

And it installs without the need for removing any pins from your lower receiver. However, that means that a portion of this magwell grip sits below the bottom lip of your magazine well.

This grip uses that space to create a flared magazine well that makes for faster reloads. It’s similar to the wide magazine wells that competition handgun shooters use on their race guns.

Armaspec claims that it makes your reloads up to 48% faster. That’s pretty specific. Your mileage may vary. But, suffice to say, that this magwell grip also helps you reload faster and reload without looking.

So, even though it adds a bit of bulk, it’s USEFUL BULK. This Armaspec magwell grip is ideal for those who want to improve their overall performance, not just their comfort.

3. FAB Defense Magazine Well Grip for M16/M4/AR15

Key Specs:

  • Fabric/Material:

Polymer

  • Weight:

0.174 lb, 79 g

Pros:

  • Deep finger grooves give you a very secure grip.
  • Works as a magazine well funnel to speed up your reloads, even when you’re not looking.
  • Installs without any tools or gunsmithing.

Cons:

  • Finger grooves may not be comfortable if they don’t fit your fingers.
  • Pretty aggressive aesthetic that may not fit everyone’s taste.
Check on OpticsPlanet
Check on Palmetto

The FAB Defense Magazine Well Grip for M16/M4/AR15 might be the most aggressively contoured AR-15 magwell grip on the market, which comes with ups and downs.

The main thing with this magazine well grip is the finger grooves. There are 3 remarkably deep finger grooves on this magwell grip. That’s cool, because it gives you a really secure hold on the front of your rifle. Your hand will definitely stay in place.

However, if the finger grooves don’t fit your fingers, it can be a bit uncomfortable because it forces your fingers into the grooves. Also, your pinky ends up flying.

But most people find that this grip is comfortable.

This grip also works as a magazine well funnel to guide your magazines into the magazine well for faster reloads, even without looking.

Lastly, this grip installed without any tools or gunsmithing. And it’s made of fiberglass reinforced polymer, which is probably overkill for durability. But at least you know it won’t break.

So, if you’re into finger grooves, this magwell grip is the one for you.

Rail Mounted

4. CAA Ergonomic CQB Magazine Grip

Key Specs:

  • Material:

Polymer

  • Weight (oz.):

2.56

Pros:

  • Adds a lot of grip space to your magazine well. It’s basically a full vertical grip.
  • Attaches to your rifle very securely using a section of picatinny rail.
  • Could be moved further out for use a standard vertical grip

Cons:

  • Still a bit bulky because of the picatinny rail mount.
  • Thumb screw could be a snag.
Check on OpticsPlanet
Other Options

The CAA Ergonomic CQB Magazine Grip makes use of the space on your forend rail that you’re not using because you grip the magazine well. It's a smart use of space.

This magwell grip essentially adds a full vertical grip to your magazine well. It’s enough room for almost all four fingers, unless you have really thick fingers.

However, it has 3 shallow finger grooves that help keep your fingers in place on the grip and give you a more secure hold on your rifle for better maneuverability and more precise shooting.

Unfortunately, the vertical grip portion sits out in front of your magazine well. So this is a fairly bulky grip, since it mounts to a picatinny rail. It just takes more space to add the rail section.

That brings up another thing: if you need the rail space immediately in front of your barrel nut, this grip may not be a good fit for your rig.

But, if you have the rail space, this CAA grip provides a comfortable place for your support hand and attaches really securely to your rifle.

Best Minimal

5. Command Arms Accessories CAA Magazine Well Grip

Pros:

  • Offers a lot of grip space, enough for almost all four fingers.
  • Adds relatively minimal bulk to your rifle.
  • Stays out of the way during reloads.

Cons:

  • Very little grip texture within the finger grooves.
Check on OpticsPlanet
Other Options

The Command Arms Accessories CAA Magazine Well Grip isn’t quite as minimal as a simple sleeve. But it’s the most minimal complete magwell grip you can get.

It extends a tad below the bottom of your magazine well to give you room for almost all four fingers on the front of your lower receiver.

Check on OpticsPlanet

However, it only extends a little bit below the bottom of your magazine well. So it won’t interfere with your reloads.

It also has very mellow finger grooves. The finger grooves act more like grip texture. They help keep your hand in place on your rifle. But they’re not uncomfortable if your fingers don’t fit the grooves.

The grip texture within the finger groove lines does leave something to be desired, though. It’s basically smooth.

Lastly, this is a 2-piece magwell grip that installs without any gunsmithing or removing any parts from your lower receiver. It does require a tool. But the installation process is simple.

Overall, this grip is comfortable. And it adds relatively little bulk to your lower receiver, considering how much grip space it offers. It’s a good option for those who want a lot of grip space, while still keeping their rifle streamlined.

Vertical Grip

6. Mission First Tactical AR-15 React Magwell Vertical Grip

Key Specs:

  • Fabric/Material:

Polymer

  • Attachment/Mount Type:

Screw

  • Gun Model:

Heckler & Koch HK416, M16, M4, AR-15

Pros:

  • Can be used as a standard vertical grip, if you wish.
  • Storage compartment for batteries or snacks.
  • Rubberized grip panels can be removed for mounting a remote switch in your vertical grip.

Cons:

  • Adds much more bulk to your rifle than a magazine well sleeve.
Check on OpticsPlanet
Check on Palmetto

The Mission First Tactical AR-15 React Magwell Vertical Grip is a fully functional grip that mounts right in front of your magazine well. That way you can use a compact CQB grip technique, with the benefit of a vertical grip.

This grip gives you enough room for a full four-finger grip on the front of your lower receiver. And it has finger grooves that help keep your hand in place for more stability and precision.

Since this grip mounts to a picatinny rail, it does move your hand out from the magazine well an inch or two. But this keeps your fingers away from the ejection port for more safety in the event of an overcharged round or a squib load.

Also, there’s a storage compartment in the bottom of this grip for your spare optic batteries or gummy bears.

And, there are two rubberized grip panels that provide even more non-slip traction and comfort. However, the grip panels can also be removed. So you can mount a remote switch for your light in this magwell grip. That way you don’t need to move your hand to use a weapon-mounted light.

Yes, this Mission First Tactical accessory adds more bulk to your rifle than a magazine well sleeve. But it also adds a lot more utility and makes your rifle more user friendly.

Best Configurable

7. FAB Defense MOJO Improved Mag-Well

Pros:

  • Easy installation. Requires a tool, but the process is simple.
  • Provides enough space for all four fingers, unless you have very thick fingers.
  • Interchangeable grip inserts for customizable look and grip texture.

Cons:

  • A bit expensive, especially if you’re not going to use the interchangeable grip inserts.
Check on OpticsPlanet
Check on Palmetto

The FAB Defense MOJO Improved Mag-Well takes up the same amount of space as most other AR-15 magwell grips. However, it offers a few more configuration options than other grips.

This grip is a 2-piece design that clamps around your magazine well. It requires a tool to install. But it doesn’t take up any space on the rail in front of your magazine well.

And it offers about enough room for all four of your fingers on the front of the magazine well.

However, the big deal with this grip is that it uses grip inserts for the grip texture. And those grip inserts can be replaced. FAB Defense makes grip inserts with different textures. They also make grip inserts that are purely for looking cool, which is key.

But the standard grip insert offers a good grip texture that provides non-slip traction for your support hand.

And the finger grooves are mellow enough that you won’t even notice if your fingers don’t fit the grooves.

The only downside to this FAB Defense magwell grip is that it’s a bit pricey. And the higher price is mostly because of the configurability. So it may not be worth the money if you’re not going to change out the grip.

But, if you want configurability, this is the magwell grip to get and add in a notable foregrip.
