First, I refuse to answer this question: “Is the Mosin Nagant a good rifle?”
If you’re here, you’ve already made up your mind about that. And I don’t want to start any Mosin Nagant wars. We don’t need that.
Regardless of what you believe about the Mosin Nagant, the design is over 100 years old. So an upgrade or two can’t hurt. And a stock is a great upgrade to slap on any rifle, Mosin Nagant or not.
Surprisingly—or maybe unsurprisingly—there are quite a few Mosin Nagant stocks out there. But we’ve narrowed it down to one more than a handful of stocks. Interestingly, most of them are from Boyds Hardwood Gunstocks.
SPOILER—if you just want to know which one came out on top and upgrade your Mosin Nagant as fast as possible, get the ATI Outdoor Mosin Nagant 7.62x54R Monte Carlo Stock. It’s a good stock. And the price matches the Mosin Nagant pricing scheme. It’s a good deal, all around.

1. ATI Outdoor Mosin Nagant 7.62x54R Monte Carlo Stock - Overall Best Mosin Nagant Stock
The ATI Outdoor Mosin Nagant 7.62x54R Monte Carlo Stock is easily the best overall Mosin Nagant stock because it’s a legitimate upgrade over the standard Mosin wooden stock. But it’s super affordable.
The biggest upgrade is the polymer construction. The polymer is more weather resistant and lighter than the original wooden stock.
Additionally, there’s a rubber recoil pad. It’s super nice for easing the recoil of the 7.62mm round. And it’s 100% more recoil pad than you get with the standard wood stock.
The stock also has a raised comb and a molded cheek piece. It’s a Monte Carlo stock shape that helps you get a more consistent sight picture and a better cheek weld. That means faster sight acquisition and faster shots.
Lastly, this stock has modern sling mounts, rather than the old wire sling mounts. So you can upgrade your sling, too.
However, there’s no adjustability on this stock. There’s nothing flashy about it. It’s simply a lighter stock with a slightly more comfortable cheek piece.
But, if you want an affordable stock that’s better than the original stock in pretty much every aspect, this is the stock to get.
2. ProMag Mosin Nagant Archangel Tactical Stock - Tactical Mosin Nagant Stock
The ProMag Archangel Opfor Mosin-Nagant M1891 Precision Rifle Stock is upgraded in almost every aspect. And it’s not just a modern version of the original Mosin Nagant stock.
The big deal with this stock is that it enables your Mosin Nagant to accept detachable magazines. You can still use the classic stripper clips. But the detachable magazine enables you to reload using a standard reload procedure, if you want to reload faster.
And this stock comes with one 5-round detachable magazine.
The upgrades don’t end there, though.
The stock is adjustable for comb height and length of pull. Both adjustments are accomplished with a precise click system that enables you to really dial in this stock so that it fits perfectly.
Then, the pistol grip uses a goose-neck design that gives you many of the benefits of a pistol grip, without compromising your precision shooting grip. The grip is more vertical than a traditional rifle grip, which puts your wrist and elbow in a more neutral position.
Additionally, the goose-neck design also gives you a deeper trough for your thumb. So you can get your trigger finger in a natural position over the trigger for a straighter trigger press.
The stock is also capped with a rubber recoil pad, which makes shooting more comfortable overall.
Lastly, there are QD sling sockets. That way you can use modern slings and sling configurations on your Mosin Nagant.
Just be careful when you install this ProMag stock. It’s designed for exactly Mosin Nagant specs. If your Mosin is slightly out of spec, you can damage the stock when you start tightening things down.
But we’re all familiar with the occasional manufacturing inconsistencies of the rifle. So that’s not a huge deal.
If you want a superbly comfortable stock for your Mosin Nagant, this is definitely the stock to get.
Very last thing: You can also get the ProMag Mosin Nagant Archangel Tactical Stock in OD green and tan. Make your rifle look how you want, too.
3. Boyds Hardwood Gunstocks Featherweight Thumbhole Mosin Nagant - Value Mosin Nagant Stock
The Boyds Hardwood Gunstocks Featherweight Thumbhole Mosin Nagant is just about the lightest wooden stock you can get. But, this stock is also a significant ergonomic upgrade for your Mosin.
The main difference between this and the original stock is the thumb hole and grip shape.
The thumb hole obviously helps you get a precision shooting grip with a thumb-around grip. But the front of the grip also has a tang near the bottom to help you get a consistent grip everytime. And it keeps your hand in place from shot to shot.
On the backend, there’s a slightly raised comb. However, if the comb were just a tad higher, it would be just about perfect for fast sight acquisition and faster shooting.
Up front, there are vents to improve air flow and keep your barrel cool when you’re shooting fast (as fast as possible with a Mosin Nagant).
Also, there are 3 sling studs. That way you can mount modern slings in common bolt-action rifle configurations.
Lastly, this Boyds stock is fitted with a rubber recoil pad. The recoil pad is decent. But it’s pretty dense. So you still feel that Mosin Nagant recoil. Though, it’s still better than the bare butt of the original stock.
This stock is a lightweight stock. But it’s only lightweight for what it is. If you get a stock with less material—no thumbhole, a less substantial grip, and so on—it will weigh less or about the same.
But this is still a great stock that gives you a huge ergonomics upgrade over the basic Mosin Nagant stock.
If you have an M-38 Mosin, get the Boyds Hardwood Gunstocks Featherweight Thumbhole Mosin Nagant M-38. That way everything fits the way it should.
4. Boyds Hardwood Gunstocks Prairie Hunter Mosin Nagant - Mosin Nagant Stock for Hunting
The Boyds Hardwood Gunstocks Prairie Hunter Mosin Nagant focuses mostly on upgrading the ergonomics and shootability of your Mosin Nagant.
So, what does that mean?
Well, it’s still a wooden stock. So it weighs about the same as the traditional Mosin stock.
Additionally, it uses a fairly traditional shape.
The main improvement is that it has a raised comb and molded cheek piece that gives you a really firm cheek weld. Additionally, the raised comb is just about perfect for getting your eye behind your sights, every time you raise your rifle.
There’s also a rubber recoil pad, which is another upgrade over the original equipment. It’s pretty dense rubber, though. So it’s not as comfortable as some other stocks that have rather plush recoil pads.
Lastly, there are sling studs to replace the original sling swivels. That way you can mount a sling that wasn’t made over 100 years ago.
It’s not necessarily an upgrade. But this stock comes in a whole bunch of colors. If you’re looking for a Mosin Nagant walnut stock, this one fits the bill.
Anyway, this stock is the one if you want an upgraded stock that retains classic rifle ergonomics and aesthetics.
5. Boyds Hardwood Gunstocks At-One Thumbhole Mosin Nagant - Adjustable Mosin Nagant Stock
The Boyds Hardwood Gunstocks At-One Thumbhole Mosin Nagant is a superbly adjustable Mosin Nagant stock. And, as you may have guessed, it’s a thumbhole stock.
Interestingly, the thumbhole is almost unnoticeable as a thumbhole. It’s huge. The thumbhole is large enough that you could potentially fit four fingers through the thumbhole if you’re left-handed (and have very small hands, admittedly).
However, it’s still useful for keeping your hand in place as you fire multiple shots. And it ensures that you get a consistent grip every time you shoulder your rifle. That makes it much easier to acquire your sights and take shots as quickly as possible.
The stock also has an adjustable comb and length of pull. And the adjustment range of both of these is huge. Even if you have super long arms, you’ll be able to get this stock to fit.
The rubber recoil pad is a tad thicker than many other Boyds Hardwood stocks. So it eases recoil pretty well.
Additionally, there’s a polymer insert in the forend that gives you a good place for your support hand.
And, as always, there are 3 sling studs that accept modern slings and enable you to use a variety of sling configurations.
This is not a budget stock. But, if you value adjustability, there’s no other stock that offers such great ergonomics and adjustment ranges.
P.S. You can also get this stock with an inlet for Timney triggers: Boyds Hardwood Gunstocks At-One Thumbhole Mosin Nagant.
6. Boyds Hardwood Gunstocks At-One Mosin Nagant Stock - Precision Mosin Nagant Stock
This stock is pretty similar to the Boyds adjustable thumbhole stock. However, the Boyds Hardwood Gunstocks At-One Mosin Nagant Stock is built with more traditional ergonomics.
First, this stock has a whole bunch of rubberized inserts at key contact points. The inserts are strategically placed to make your rifle much more comfortable than using the original stock.
There’s also a polymer insert on the forend that gives you a comfortable place for your support hand.
Additionally, the length of pull and comb height are adjustable. And the adjustment range is huge. This stock can be adjusted to fit anyone, even shooters with the longest arms.
However, unlike the Boyds thumbhole stock, this stock uses a traditional rifle grip. It’s got a rubberized insert. And it’s perfectly angled for a light, precision shooting grip.
It’s pretty much a broken record at this point. But this stock has 3 sling studs for all your favorite slings and sling configurations. There are also QD sling sockets for those who want a more tactical sling setup.
This stock is pretty pricey. But, if you’re building the most precise Mosin Nagant possible, this is probably the best stock to get.
A Better Mosin Nagant
Even if you’re a diehard Mosin Nagant fan, it’s hard to deny that the original stock has a lot of room for improvement.
Fortunately, you can just replace the stock. Put the sander and dremel away.
If you want a solid Mosin Nagant stock that’s as affordable as a Mosin Nagant, get the ATI Outdoor Mosin Nagant 7.62x54R Monte Carlo Stock. This ATI Mosin Nagant stock is an upgrade to almost every aspect of the original Mosin Nagant stock. And it’s priced for everyone.
It’s time to stop suffering through a 100-year-old stock. Upgrade your Mosin Nagant stock and upgrade your entire shooting experience with a classic rifle.
